Abstract
Objectives : This study was performed to test psychoneuroimmunological(PNI) effects of a health management program for middle-aged women with low back pain.

Methods : This study was one group pretest-posttest design. The subjects were 21 women volunteers with low back pain who were between 40 and 59 years old and risiding in Daegu. The program was carried out twice a week for 2 hours for six weeks, and composed of low degree back exercise for 50 minutes, abdominal breathing for 30 minutes, and education for 30 minutes about stress management for low back pain, diet and exercise. To evaluate the effect of the health management program, psychological (experience for back pain, anxiety, stress, and subjective health state), neuroendocrinological (serum cortisol, growth hormone), immunological (WBC, lymphocyte, CD4 and CD4/CD8) and the other parameters were measured before and after the program.

Results : Experience for back pain was decreased significantly (p=0.044) after the program. Degrees of anxiety and stress related to back pain were decreased significantly (p=0.016, p=0.021, respectively). The subjective health state was also decreased significantly(p=0.003). CD4 and CD4/CD8 were increased (p==0.017, p=0.002, respectively), while the level of triglyceride, systolic and diastolic blood pressure were decreased (p=0.026, p=0.035, p=O.OOO, respectively).

Conclusions : These results suggest that the health management program seems to be effective in reducing low back pain and to have beneficial psychoneuroimmunological effects in middleaged women with low back pain.
